How many times have you forgotten a password in the last year? Losing a website password isn't a huge deal, because you can reset those with your email address. But forgetting your computer password is scary, because they're more difficult to reset.

If you've forgotten the password for a Windows administrator account, don't fear. There are several methods you can use to recover it. We'll show you how to reset administrator passwords in Windows, even if you don't have admin rights. While we focus on Windows 10 here, these tips should largely work the same in Windows 11 and other versions, too.

1. Reset the Windows Administrator Password With a Microsoft Account

One of the major benefits of using a Microsoft account with Windows is that you can reset your password by going through Microsoft's tools without much hassle.

First, make sure that you really can't access your Microsoft account (perhaps your keyboard has a stuck key or something similar). Go to login.live.com on your phone or another computer and try to sign in with the Microsoft account you use on your PC, making sure you don't mistype anything.

If you still can't get in here, then proceed with resetting your Microsoft password. Head to the Microsoft password reset page to get started, though you can also reset your password from the Windows login screen by clicking the I forgot my password link.

After confirming your identity with the details you've provided on your account, this page will walk you through resetting your Microsoft account password. Once that's done, use the new password to sign into your PC.

It's worth noting that if you have a Microsoft account, you should take a few minutes to update your security info on your Microsoft account page. 2. Reset a Local Windows Admin Password Using the Lock Screen Workaround

If you don't use a Microsoft account to log into Windows, you'll have to reset the password for a local account. Windows 10 and 11 allow you to set security questions for local accounts that help you get back in easily from the lock screen if you forget the password. If you haven't set those up already, however, they won't do you much good now.

If the locked account is the only administrator account on your PC, you'll need to first use a workaround to launch an elevated Command prompt. We walk through this process below.

However, if you have another administrator account on the computer aside from the one you're locked out of, you don't need to go through all these steps. In that case, log into the other admin account on your computer and change the password using the command line, which doesn't require jumping through as many hoops.

Setting Up the Password Reset Workaround

First, you'll need to create a bootable Windows 10 disk on a flash drive. This will obviously require another computer, since you can't get into yours.

Once you've made that, insert the drive into your PC so you can boot from the new installation. On most machines, you need to press F12 or a similar key as soon as you power on your computer to choose a device to boot from.

Boot from your flash drive, let the Windows installer load, and when you see the initial Windows Setup screen, press Shift + F10 to open a Command Prompt.

Next, you need to know which partition your Windows installation is on. Usually, this will be the C: drive, but it might be different for you. To check, type the following command, which will change the current directory of the Command Prompt to the root of the C: drive (or whichever letter you insert).

cd /d C:

If the command returns The system cannot find the drive specified, then that letter isn't right; try D and continue down the alphabet. Once you find the right drive, you'll want to change the directory again using the cd command. Type this line to access the System32 folder:

cd Windows\System32

If you see The system cannot find the path specified, you've selected a drive other than the one Windows is on. Change the drive to a different letter and try again until you find the right one.

Once you're in the System32 folder, you can pull a little trick. Windows includes an accessibility feature called Sticky Keys, which you can launch by hitting the Shift key five times quickly. By swapping the executable that runs Sticky Keys with a link to the Command Prompt's executable file, you can run a command line to reset your password right from the login screen.

To do this, type these two commands, one at a time. The first backs up the Sticky Keys shortcut in the C:\Windows folder (the .. is a shortcut to move to the parent folder) so you can restore it later; the second replaces the Sticky Keys shortcut with a Command Prompt shortcut. If asked to give approval for either, do so.

You're done here, so type this command to reboot the computer and head back to the normal sign-in screen:

Running a Command Prompt to Change Your Password

In previous versions of Windows, you could simply run the renamed shortcut to access a Command Prompt right from the login screen. However, Microsoft Defender now blocks these attempts, so there's an extra step required. If you're on an old version of Windows 10, or still using Windows 8 or earlier, you can press Shift five times on the login screen to open a Command Prompt.

On modern versions of Windows 10 or Windows 11, you'll have to reboot into Safe Mode for this to work. To do this, click the Power menu in the bottom-right corner of the login screen. Then, hold the Shift key and click Restart. If you see a warning that restarting may cause people to lose work, click Restart Anyway.

Then, you'll see the advanced settings menu. Click Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings, then Restart. Your PC will reboot, then ask which startup option you want to use. Hit the 4 key to select Enable Safe Mode. This loads Windows with only the essential drivers and services, preventing Microsoft Defender from blocking the workaround.

When you reboot to the Windows sign-in screen in Safe Mode, hit Shift five times quickly. This should bring up a Command Prompt, which has administrator access. If this doesn't bring up the Command Prompt, repeat the steps in the above section, but use utilman.exe instead of sethc.exe as the file you rename.

Then, reboot into Safe Mode and click the Ease of Access icon at the bottom-right of the login screen, which should hopefully bring up the Command Prompt. On Windows 10, this icon looks like the clock icon in the bottom-right of the image below. On Windows 11, it looks like an outline of a person.

If you need to access this archive at a later date, you can use email clients like Thunderbird and import all mail on a local machine and then perform a search. Alternatively, you can upload the mail back into a Google Workspace/G Suite user account; both options work well.

Step #8: Suspend access to the account

Suspending the account will block new emails and calendar invites, and disable login access. The account has been deleted and historical email/files can be searched through the Google Vault Service. Many companies keep the user account suspended for 6-12 months so they can easily search through old email records. The catch — a “suspended” user still consumes a paid Google Workspace (G Suite) license. If you want to re-purpose the license for a new hire, you must delete the account entirely. If you don’t foresee a need for employee email/files to be searchable via Google Vault, proceed to step #9 immediately.

Step #9: Transfer remaining data (Drive, Docs, etc.)

From the Admin Console, Navigate to Apps → Google Drive. Under Drive Settings, you’ll see an option to transfer files. Transferring ownership will not affect the existing permissions on the files/folders.

Step #10: Delete user account

Once the account is deleted, you can repurpose the Google Workspace license for a new hire.

Prerequisites

Before you start upgrading, fulfill the following prerequisites:

Determine which version of Windows Server to upgrade to.
Make sure you have a valid product key and activation method. Keys and methods may vary depending on the distribution channel you received Windows Server media from, for example a Commercial Licensing program, Retail, or Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
Ensure that the install media is ready to use.
Have a location to store files away from your computer, such as a USB flash drive or network location.
Review Upgrade and migrate roles and features in Windows Server.
Review Microsoft server applications compatibility.
Review any third-party application vendor support requirements.
Make sure your computer:
- Meets or exceeds the hardware requirements for Windows Server.
- Isn't running in Azure.

Note

If you're upgrading a Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2 server with Configuration Manager installed, also follow the pre-upgrade and post-upgrade instructions at Upgrade on-premises infrastructure that supports Configuration Manager.

Collect diagnostic information

We recommend that you collect some information from your devices for diagnostic and troubleshooting purposes in case the upgrade is unsuccessful. We also recommend you store the information somewhere you can get to even if you can't access your device.

To collect your information:

Open an elevated PowerShell prompt, make a note of your current directory, and run the following commands.

Tip
Get-ComputerInfo requires PowerShell 5.1 or later. If your Windows Server version doesn't include Powershell, you can find this information in the registry. Open Registry Editor, go to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion key, and then copy and paste the Windows Server BuildLabEx and EditionID values.
Using File Explorer, navigate to the directory you noted down, and copy the files to a USB flash drive or network location off of your computer.

After you've collected all of your Windows Server-related information, we recommend that you back up your server operating system, apps, and VMs. You must also shut down, quick migrate, or live migrate any VMs currently running on the server. You can't have any VMs running during the in-place upgrade.

Perform the upgrade

Now that you've completed your prerequisites and collected diagnostic information, you're ready to perform the upgrade. In this section, you use Windows Server Setup to select the settings for the upgrade. Windows Server Setup uses these settings to upgrade your version of Windows Server, during which time your computer restarts several times.

To perform the in-place upgrade:

Using File Explorer, navigate to the Windows Server Setup media. Then open setup.exe. For example, if you're using removal media the file path might be D:\setup.exe.
Important
Depending on your security settings, User Account Control may prompt you to allow setup to make changes to your device. If you're happy to continue, select Yes.
By default, setup automatically downloads updates for the installation. If you're okay with the default settings, select Next to continue.
If you don't want Setup to automatically download updates, select Change how Setup downloads updates, choose the option appropriate to your environment, and then select Next.
If prompted, enter your product key and then select Next.
Select the edition of Windows Server you want to install and then select Next.
Review the applicable notices and license terms. If you agree to the terms, select Accept.
Select Keep personal files and apps to choose to do an in-place upgrade, and then select Next.
After Setup finishes analyzing your device, it displays the Ready to install screen. To continue the upgrade, select Install.

The in-place upgrade starts, and you should see a progress bar. After the upgrade finishes, your server restarts.

Checking if your upgrade was successful

After the upgrade to Windows Server is done, you must make sure the upgrade was successful.

To make sure your upgrade was successful:

Open an elevated PowerShell prompt and run the following command to verify that the version and edition matches the media and values you selected during setup.

Make sure all of your applications are running and that your client connections to the applications are successful.

I want to allocate memory to work as a swap file in an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instance. How do I do that?

Short description

When physical RAM is already in use, Amazon EC2 instances use swap space as a short-term replacement for physical RAM.

Contents of RAM that aren't in active use or that aren't needed as urgently as other data or instructions can be temporarily paged to a swap file. This frees up RAM for more immediate use.

You can also create swap space on a partition. For more information, see How do I allocate memory to work as swap space on an Amazon EC2 instance using a partition on my hard drive?

Note: It's a best practice to create swap space only on ephemeral storage instance store volumes.

Resolution

Note: Before beginning this resolution, verify that your file system supports the usage of swap files.

Calculate the swap space size

Create a swap file

1. Use the dd command to create a swap file on the root file system. In the command, bs is the block size and count is the number of blocks. The size of the swap file is the block size option multiplied by the count option in the dd command. Adjust these values to determine the desired swap file size.

The block size you specify should be less than the available memory on the instance or you receive a "memory exhausted" error.

In this example dd command, the swap file is 4 GB (128 MB x 32):

$ sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=128M count=32

2. Update the read and write permissions for the swap file:

$ sudo chmod 600 /swapfile

3. Set up a Linux swap area:

$ sudo mkswap /swapfile

4. Make the swap file available for immediate use by adding the swap file to swap space:

$ sudo swapon /swapfile

5. Verify that the procedure was successful:

$ sudo swapon -s

6. Enable the swap file at boot time by editing the /etc/fstab file.

Google Authenticator is supported in Parallels Client running on all supported platforms, including mobile, desktop, and Web.

To use Google Authenticator, a user needs to install the Authenticator app on their iOS or Android device. Simply visit Google Play or App Store and install the app. Once the Authenticator app is installed, the user is ready to connect to Parallels RAS using two-factor authentication.

To connect to Parallels RAS:

The user opens Parallels Client or Web Client and logs in using his/her credentials.
The multi-factor authentication dialog opens displaying a barcode (also known as QR code) and a secret key.
The user opens the Google Authenticator app on their mobile device:
- If this is the first time they use it, they tap Begin and then tap Scan a barcode.
- If a user already has another account in Google Authenticator, they tap the plus-sign icon and choose Scan a barcode.
The user then scans the barcode displayed in the Parallels Client login dialog.
If scanning doesn't work for any reason, the user goes back in the app, chooses Enter a provided key and then enters the account name and the key displayed in the Parallels Client login dialog.

Changing Domain Password

If you need to change your domain account password, you can do it right from Parallels Client.

To change your domain password:

Click File > Change Domain Password in the main menu (or right-click a connection and choose Change Domain Password).
In the Logon dialog, type your current password and click OK.
In the Change Password dialog, enter a new password in both fields and click OK.

Your domain account password is now changed. Your existing connections in Parallels Client are automatically updated to use the new password.

- Service address and customer name, as they appear in your current carrier contract.
- Requested date and time for the port.
- (Optional) If you want to port your BTN, indicate one of the following options:
  - I am porting my BTN and I want to replace it with a new BTN that I am providing. I can confirm that this new BTN is on the same account with the current carrier.
  - I am porting my BTN and I want to close out my account with my current carrier.
  - I am porting my BTN because my account is currently set up so that each phone number is its own BTN. (Select this option only when your account with the current carrier is set up this way.)
  - Download the Letter of Agency (LOA) for Local Telephone Number Porting and fill it out. If you are porting phone numbers from different carriers, fill out a separate LOA for each carrier.
Do one of the following:
- If you are submitting a support request from the Amazon Chime console, for Email, enter the email address associated with your Amazon Chime administrator account. Choose Submit request.
- If you are creating a case in AWS Support Center Contact options, select a contact method. Optionally, for Additional contacts, enter email addresses of people to be notified of case status updates.
AWS Support lets you know whether your phone numbers can be ported from your existing phone carrier. You receive responses from AWS Support in one of the following ways:

3. Expand the Permissions section, and choose Specify individual ACL permissions.
4. Choose Add grantee at the end of the Access control list (ACL) section.
5. Paste the key provided by AWS Support into the Grantee text box.
6. Choose the Read checkbox under the Objects section of the page.
7. Choose Upload.
After you provide the LOA, AWS Support confirms with your existing phone carrier that the information on the LOA is correct. If the information provided on the LOA does not match the information that your phone carrier has on file, AWS Support contacts you to update the information provided on the LOA.
(Optional) View the status of your porting request in the Amazon Chime console under Calling, Phone number management, Pending. AWS Support also contacts you with updates and requests for further information, as needed. For more information, see Phone number porting status definitions.
Assign Amazon Chime Business Calling phone numbers to individual users.
The phone numbers are not activated for use until after the Firm Order Commit (FOC) date is established, as shown in the following steps. For more information, see Managing phone number inventory.
After your existing phone carrier confirms that the LOA is correct, they review and approve the requested port. Then they provide AWS Support with a Firm Order Commit (FOC) date and time for the port to occur.
AWS Support contacts you with the FOC to confirm that the date and time works for you.
On the FOC date, the ported phone numbers are activated for use with Amazon Chime.

2. On the Create case page, choose Service limit increase. In Limit type select Amazon Connect.
3. In Contact Center Instance ARN, provide the Amazon Resource Name for your instance. The request cannot be processed without this information. For help, see Find your Amazon Connect instance ID/ARN.
4. In Region, select the AWS Region for your instance.
5. In Use case description, provide the following information:
  1. Let us know you're porting away.
  2. The name of your Amazon Connect instance and the numbers you are porting away.
  3. The name of your new carrier.
In Contact options, choose how AWS Support should contact you.

Here's what happens next:

AWS Support contacts you, indicating that you should begin the process with the winning carrier.
The winning carrier will request that you provide them with following information:
- Proof of ownership of the numbers you want to port away. Provide them with screenshots of the Amazon Connect instance with the phone numbers you want to port away, and screenshots of your AWS bill.
- Usually the winning carrier will require a LOA (Letter of Authorization) that you need to complete. It's important that you provide the correct contact details from your AWS bill.
The winning carrier will send the request to AWS Support.
AWS Support will verify that the request from the winning carrier matches the information we have about who owns those numbers. If all details match exactly, we will approve the request.
Important
Verifying the authenticity of the winning carrier's port-out request is critical for the security of your phone number. If the contact details are not correct (for example, there's a name mismatch), your port-out request may be rejected, causing delays and requiring you to resubmit your request.
The winning carrier will complete the port-out request on the date and time that you establish with them. Work with the winning carrier to complete the remainder of the port-out process to ensure a seamless transition.

The Proxmox email gateway GUI allows you to set a non-authenticated smarthost.

I’ve been using the excellent Proxmox mail gateway to filter spam for our CareTech email server. Since I haven’t decided, yet, to pay our ISP their monthly charge for a static IP address, I can not send mail directly and have to relay through a smarthost. The Proxmox Mail Gateway interface allows you to set a smarthost but offers no provision for relaying with SMTP authentication. If you need to authenticate with your smart host, you’ll need to spend some time with the command line. Let’s get started.

1. Let’s take care of software dependencies first. You need to install a SASL library that’s not included by default; if you skip this step, you’ll see errors in your Postfix log and authentication will fail. Update software package information, and then install “libsasl2-modules.”

apt-get update

apt-get install libsasl2-modules

2. Change to the /etc/postfix/ directory and create a file to store the hostname, username, and password of your relay host; and set secure permissions on the file. It doesn’t matter what you name the file; just use a name that makes sense to you. I’ve chosen to call it “relay_passwd.”

cd /etc/postfix

touch relay_passwd

chmod 0600 relay_passwd

3. Edit the file using your favourite command-line editor, and enter just one line in precisely this format (replacing your relay server, port number, username, and password with your own information):

[smtp.example.com]:587 username:password

4. Save and close the file. Then, hash the newly created password file to make a db file Postfix can use:

postmap relay_passwd

5. Make a backup copy of your main.cf file in case you mess things up and need to restore known-good configuration. I like to date-stamp my configuration file backups, like so. Replace with today’s date.

6. Edit main.cf and add the following lines. Again, replace the “smtp.example.com” host name with the actual host name of your smart host; use the correct port number; and pay attention to the file name.

7. Restart Postfix, and test your new configuration.

8. Does it work? Great! Now, note that the main.cf file is written by the Proxmox web interface and the next time you make settings changes in the web interface affecting Postfix config, the lines you just added will be over-written and lost. To make this change permanent, you’ll need to edit the main.cf template file. Change to the /var/lib/pmg/templates directory and edit the main.cf file there, making exactly the same edits you made to the /etc/postfix/main/cf file. This will ensure that next time Proxmox writes out config file changes, it will include your custom lines and your authenticated smarthost relay will keep on working.

Quite a good one, it requires fiddling with zimbra and postfix and unfortunately requires some manual configuration. I suppose you can handle the amazon stuff for getting an account.

Submit an Amazon Connect support ticket to verify if your phone number can be ported to Amazon Connect.

Premium support plan

Open AWS Support Center at https://console.aws.amazon.com/support/home

and sign in using your AWS account.
Choose Create case.
Choose Technical support.
For Case classification, do the following:
1. Choose service as Connect (Contact center).
2. Choose category as Phone Number Porting.
3. Choose the required severity.
4. For Contact Center Instance ARN, enter the instance ARN (also called the instance ID). For instructions on how to find your instance ARN, see Find your Amazon Connect instance ID/ARN.
5. Enter the subject.
6. Under Case description, Use case description, include as much information as possible about your request, including phone number(s) to be ported, your current carrier, and the contact information for the person authorized to make changes to your current phone service. If you don't know all of these details, you can leave information out.
Expand Contact options, and then choose your Preferred contact language and Contact methods.
Choose Submit.
The Amazon Connect team will review your ticket and gets back to you.

Basic support plan

Step 2: Complete Letter of Authorization (LOA)

If the phone number qualifies for porting, the Amazon Connect team will provide you a Letter of Authorization (LOA) to be completed by you. Complete all mandatory fields and sign the LOA.

Along with the LOA, Telecom regulations in many countries require additional documents to register a number, such as proof of business, proof of address, and proof of ID. For a list of country-specific requirements for porting numbers, see Region requirements for ordering and porting phone numbers.

How to complete an LOA

Step 3: The porting request goes to the Amazon Connect carrier

After you have submitted all required documentation, the Amazon Connect team submits the porting request on your behalf to the winning carrier.

The losing and winning carrier follow an industry standard process to validate the contents of the LOA and submitted documentation.
If the LOA contains discrepancies, it will be rejected and you will need to fix the discrepancies and submit a new LOA.
After the carriers successfully validate the LOA, they will either confirm your requested date or provide an available date for the actual porting. This is known as the "mutually agreed date."

Note

Most carriers require that portings are completed during normal business hours. For country-specific business hours, see Region requirements for ordering and porting phone numbers.

Step 4: Assign the phone number to the flow, request service quota increases

About 3-4 days before the mutually agreed date and time, the Amazon Connect support team loads the phone number that will be ported into the instance ARN you have provided, and then notifies you. Now it's time for you to perform the following steps:

Associate the phone number to the desired flow so the phone number will be ready to receive phone calls after the porting is completed. If you require assistance assigning multiple phone numbers to contact flows, let us know in your support request.

Important
If you do not assign the phone number to the flow, calls will not arrive successfully to your Amazon Connect contact center.
Submit a service quota request at least five days in advance of the mutually agreed date for any changes to your service quotas required to support your use case. For example, you may need to increase the number of concurrent calls per instance, or enable countries for outbound calling.

Step 5: Checklist of activities on your porting date

The action of porting a number can be disruptive: the process involves updating the routing of phone numbers between carriers across a country or Region, including carriers not involved in the actual porting. In rare cases it can take several hours before all routes across all Telecom carriers are fully updated.

Steps you perform to minimize disruption to your phone services

On the mutually agreed port date, perform the following steps:

Double-check that the activities listed in Step 4 have been completed:
1. Verify that you have assigned the number being ported into your Amazon Connect instance to the appropriate contact flow.
2. Verify that any required service quota increases or changes for your Amazon Connect instance were implemented. For example, increase the number of concurrent calls per instance, or enable countries for outbound calling.
Monitor call traffic from your existing contact center to confirm that incoming traffic has stopped.
Place test calls to your Amazon Connect instance to verify calls are being routed to the correct flows.
Ensure agents are logged in to the Contact Control Panel (CCP) and can answer calls as they are received.

Requirements

A modern Linux distribution. E.g. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS 64-bit or later.
QEMU >= 4.2.0
A CPU with Intel VT-x / AMD SVM support is required (grep -e vmx -e svm /proc/cpuinfo)

Installation Preparation

Install QEMU and modify your user using https://christitus.com/vm-setup-in-linux Guide.

Clone this repository on your QEMU system. Files from this repository are used in the following steps.

Installation Media

This downloads our installation media and I’d recommend using Catalina for compatibility and performance.

Note: Modern NVIDIA GPUs are supported on HighSierra but not on later versions of macOS. Recommended PCI Passthrough GPU is 5700XT as this works on Catalina and above. If you go with a 6000 Series Card only certain ones will work on Big Sur and Monterey, but not earlier releases.

Virtual Machine Setup

I recommend using Virtual Machine Manager (virt-manager) as it has a fantastic interface and Simple-KVM does a great job with their setup script. Simply type the following to get the macOS VM setup:

sudo ./make.sh --add

VM Modification

Before we can start out VM we have to have a hard drive to load it. You have two options: physical hard drive passthrough or qcow2 file.

Obviously, the physical drive is considerably faster, but not possible in some instances such as laptops or if you can’t afford a secondary drive.

Physical Hard Drive Passthrough

This is pretty simple as you just click Add Hardware -> Storage and then specify your hard drive.

Note: while you can use drive short names /dev/sda I’d recommend using /dev/disk/by-id/HARDDRIVESERIAL as this doesn’t ever change.

QCOW2 File for Hard Drive

This is even simpler as you just click Add Hardware -> Storage and create new file. Just make sure you put it on at least a SSD or a nvme drive as it will be super slow if you don’t.

Install Process

Boot your machine and select the OS Install Partition on startup.

Use the Disk Utility tool within the macOS installer to partition, and format the virtual disk attached to the macOS VM.

TIP: Using a non-APFS filesystem is recommended.

Enter a default rejection notice that'll be sent to the spammers. You can use the one we used in the screenshot above to enrage and annoy the spammers :)
Scroll down and see if you have a Trusted Email Senders List to which you don't want to apply the above settings. If you don't currently have a Trusted Email Senders list, simply uncheck the box.
Hit Save and voilà, you have blocked those pesky spam emails forever!!!

There are serveral methods that may work:

You just have to enter developer mode, then go for technical settings->user interface->views, search for " Mail: Pay Now mail notification template" and remove code lines in question.
The base template for the mails is in /addons/mail/data/mail_data.xml

Your organization might want a resource manager who can accept or decline when a resource is scheduled. For example, a resource manager might make sure that a particular room is booked only by classroom trainers in the mornings.

Set up a resource manager

A resource manager doesn't have to be an administrator, but you must be an administrator with Super Admin privileges to set this up.

As an administrator, sign in to Google Calendar.
Share the resource with your organization or specific people who are allowed to book the resource.
Share the resource with the resource manager. Give the resource manager permission to Make changes AND manage sharing.
On the Calendar Details tab for the resource, set Auto-accept invitations to be Automatically add all invitations to this calendar.
As the resource manager, arrange to get resource notifications.

Now when a user schedules the resource, the resource manager gets notified and can accept or decline the event on behalf of the resource.

Accept or decline events for a resource

If you haven't already done so, set up a resource manager as described above.
As the resource manager, when you get email titled "New Event," click more details to go to the event.

Tip: If you're personally invited to the event, you'll receive both an "Invitation" message for yourself and the "New Event" message for the resource. Make sure to respond for yourself and separately on behalf of the resource.

Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is defined as the process of hosting a desktop operating system within a virtual machine (VM) running on a centralized server. VDI is a variation on the client/server computing model, sometimes referred to as server-based computing. The term was coined by VMware Inc.

What is QCOW2

One of the disk image formats supported by QEMU processor emulator is the Qcow/Qcow2. It is a representation of a fixed size block device in a file.

Qcow2 is an updated version of the qcow format, intended to supersede it. The main difference with the original is that qcow2 supports multiple virtual machine snapshots through a new, flexible model for storing snapshots. Users can easily convert qcow disk images to the qcow2 format.

We’ll cover steps of converting VDI to Qcow on the Fedora, CentOS and Ubuntu.

Fedora / CentOS 8:

Install qemu and kvm packages to use in conversion

sudo dnf -y install qemu-kvm libvirt virt-install bridge-utils

CentOS 7

sudo yum -y install qemu-kvm libvirt virt-install bridge-utils

Ubuntu / Debian:

sudo apt-get -y install qemu-kvm libvirt-bin virtinst bridge-utils

Convert vdi to qcow2.

Navigate to the directory containing vdi image file

cd ~
cd VirtualBox VMs/ubuntu-server/

As you can see, i have VMDK file called box-disk1.vmdk, i will first clone it to VDI format then make qcow2 image.

The following command is used to clone vmdk to vdi. The virtual appliance should be off.

VBoxManage clonehd box-disk1.vmdk ubuntu.vdi --format vdi

If it’s successful on cloning, you should see a vdi disk image file.

Now lets convert VDI created to Qcow2 format using qemu. Basically what we are doing is converting vdi to a raw disk images.

qemu-img convert -f vdi -O qcow2 ubuntu.vdi ubuntu.qcow2

Convert vdi to raw img

In case you would like to first create raw uncompressed image of format .img, here is how to do it.

VBoxManage clonehd --format RAW ubuntu.vdi ubuntu.img

NOTE: When you do convert a .vdi to a .img, The format .img file is uncompressed vdi and it will be the maximum size that you set your .vdi to grow up to, maximum size it can grow up to.

Convert .img to qcow2

You can as well convert .img to qcow2

qemu-img convert -f raw ubuntu.img -O qcow2 ubuntu.qcow2

If you would like to .img back to .vdi, run

VBoxManage convertdd ubuntu.img ubuntu.vdi
